Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute. We can be sure what it is not — imitation, copy, homage, or influence. What people unconsciously feel themselves drawn towards is what we here call The Original. It is next to impossible to conceptualize a design that is not in some way indebted to The Original,’ shared Naoto Fukasawa. In addition to exhibitions directed by designers, the institution also hosts a wide variety of design-focused activities such as talks and workshops. Within Tokyo Midtown's 68,900m2 expanse, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated in Midtown Garden, the green area leading to Hinokicho Park, Minato-ku.

For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view. It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to. It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives.The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. In the heart of Tokyo, Tadao Ando’s Design Sight Museum stands as a beacon of architectural brilliance and design ingenuity.
We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.
I hope it will act as a center to inspire even higher levels of designs and spread them around the world. And of course, facilities will not be serving their purposes without the people who come and use them. I hope that more and more young people will visit here, experience design and inspire themselves so that they will contribute to raise the level of Japanese culture in the future. 21_21 Design Sight is a museum in Roppongi in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, which opened in 2007. The museum, a design museum, was created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake.
In addition to the roof, the building incorporates Japan's world-leading technology such as the longest sheet of double-glazed glass in Japan. In 2001, Tokyo Midtown began its transformation when Mitsui Fudosan and its partners acquired the former Japan Defense Agency site, focusing on “Design” as its core theme. Influenced by Issey Miyake’s 2003 article advocating for a Japanese design museum, a concept he had shared with Tadao Ando since the 1980s, the project evolved to an interactive space for public engagement in design culture. This evolution led to the opening of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in March 2007, a significant addition to Tokyo’s cultural scene. The term "20/20 vision (or sight)" is used to describe perfect vision in English. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was named with our intention that it would be a venue which offers vision beyond 20/20 to see what is ahead.
This exhibition transforms three galleries at A+P to examine the street, home, and natural world from the perspective of Black feminist theory, considering the conditions of safety for Black women in these spaces. It’s presented in tandem with Fazlalizadeh’s CAAM installation Speaking to Falling Seeds, which showcases portraits of Black women from when the artist lived in L.A. Visit the first North American exhibition presenting the groundbreaking work of Korean artists in the wake of the Korean War ( ). Only The Young presents almost eighty works and archival materials that take you through the social and political dynamics of the newly formed Republic of Korea. It houses two floors, with the entrance and reception on the ground floor. A staircase leads to the ‘underground’ area, where travelling exhibitions are held. Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground. The idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC "A Piece of Cloth" concept.
The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor. Most of the volume of the building, which has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground, is buried underground. Once inside, the space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses Gallery 3 and shop space, while the underground floor houses two galleries and a naturally lit sunken court. Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel.
Like its sister museum NHMLA, La Brea Tar Pits is gradually reopening to the public and will be open from Thursdays through Sundays at present. The pieces are accompanied by a graphic display with a large layout of 50 photographs of products. Taken by the photographer Gottingham, the large images lie on the walls behind the products, so visitors can witness details that are difficult to catch with the naked eye.
